A Brief History of the Austin Symphonic Band
Early conductors include Randol Bass, now a nationally-known composer
and arranger of music.
Joint production with First United Methodist Church, KVUE-TV wins an
"Angel" public service award (Christmas concert)
Performs by invitation at Texas Music Educators' Association conference,
the first time a community band has been invited to TMEA.
Performs for the "Governor's Return of the Troops."
Austin-area premiere of the "Lord of the Rings Symphony" [de Meij]
with Don Toner [Live Oak Theatre] providing vivid narration.
John Philip Sousa Foundation awards its "Sudler Silver Scroll" to ASB.
Joint concert with River City Pops at Palmer.
ASB performs at Texas Bandmasters Association conference.
ASB supplies offstage banda to Austin Lyric Opera.
Musicians perform on-stage at ALO's performance of 'La Boheme'.
First-ever performance in Pflugerville.
Band performs a total of 12 concerts during the year.
First-ever performance at Lakeway, July 3.
Invited to perform at National Band Association / Texas Bandmasters Association conference in San Antonio, July 23.
Invited to 20th Anniversary Western International Band Conference in Seattle (declined due to costs)
First Subscription series initiated.
Band assumes responsibility for annual "Record & CD Sale" from KMFA-FM.
Microband formed for service and other events.
Band members perform at Austin Lyric Opera's Aida, Austin Musical Theatre's Music Man, and at the opening
of the 2000 Junior Olympics National Men's Gymnastic Finals.
ASB's Richard Floyd invited to be conductor of
National Band Association's National Community Band.
The Austin Symphonic Band has been invited to participate in the prestigious 61st Annual Midwest Clinic
- An International Band and Orchestra Conference - held in December every year in Chicago, IL. Participation is by invitation only, after the Midwest Clinic reviews
audition material submitted by each hopeful organization. ASB has participated in two previous Midwest Clinics - in 1989 and 1997.
ASB is scheduled to play on December 22, 2007, probably in a morning concert.
