"Father's Day in the Park"

ASB celebrates your Dad with this annual concert at the Zilker Hillside Theatre. Marches, patriotic melodies, and other familiar works are the order of the day - selections that will have your Dad's toe tappin' - as well as your own! Bring a picnic basket and spread out a blanket under the Pecan trees at the Hillside Theatre.

ASB at Midwest Clinic

Last December, the Austin Symphonic Band participated in the prestigious Midwest Clinic - An International Band and Orchestra Conference - held in December every year in Chicago, IL. Participation is by invitation only, after the Midwest Clinic reviews audition material submitted by each hopeful organization. ASB has participated in two previous Midwest Clinics - in 1989 and 1997.

This year, ASB was the "demonstration band" for Keith Brion's clinic ("Keys to Unlocking the Secrets of Sousa's Marches.") on Friday, Dec. 21, and the formal concert was presented December 22, 2007, at 8:00 a.m. The Midwest Clinic has posted videos of three of the pieces we played here.  Please note that you will need to have Realplayer installed on your computer to view them.

We have received a number of comments regarding our concerts at Midwest, which may be viewed here.

Wind Sounds on KMFA!

Classical 89.5 KMFA recently launched a new series of specials called Wind Sounds, and has aired eleven segments of the series. This unique series explores an almost endless variety of music composed for and performed by wind ensembles, bands, and wind instruments.

Wind Sounds is the brainchild of longtime volunteer and member Douglass Shands. During recent years Shands heard a desire expressed for more wind ensemble music on KMFA. Upon exploring the idea with station staff for a program comprised entirely of wind music, he discovered a plethora of music transcribed for winds. In fact, some pieces of music were originally written for winds then later made popular in orchestral versions.

Wind Sounds is produced locally in the studios of KMFA by Douglass Shands and Philip Pollack, and hosted by long-time KMFA afternoon announcer Rich Upton.

All of the shows broadcast to date, including the Christmas Special show, are archived on KMFA's website.

Please check Wind Sounds out, and if you like it, let KMFA know! This can take the form of letters, e-mail, phone calls (512-476-KMFA), and most effectively, pledges to support KMFA, Austin's only listener-supported 24-hour Classical Music station.

Update!  Good news for Wind Sounds fans. WS will broadcast every Saturday at 5:00 P.M., May 10 through August 30 on Classical 89.5, KMFA, Austin. Those not in the listening area may receive the streaming audio webcast from here.

Welcome to the home page of the Austin Symphonic Band, the official band of the City of Austin. Under the baton of Music Director Richard Floyd, this Texas-based group has become one of this nation's premier volunteer concert bands. The band was awarded the John Philip Sousa Foundation's coveted Sudler Silver Scroll in 1993.

The band's 2007-2008 season extends the band's tradition of bringing quality music to the community with the continuation of our three concert Subscription Series. The Series features themed concerts and fine guest artists; the venues for the concerts include the LBJ HS PAC and the Reagan High School PAC. This year's first Subscription Series Concert is a preview of the concert that ASB will be performing at the prestigious Midwest Clinic - An International Band and Orchestra Conference - held in December every year in Chicago, IL. Our second Subscription Series Concert will showcase music from movies, broadway musicals, and of course, some marches. The third and final Subscription Series concert will feature selections of popular and classical music with a Russian theme. Please click here for season details.

As always, the band will present free concerts at the Zilker Park Hillside Theatre in the fall, on Mother's Day, and on Father's Day, as well as other events which will allow us to make music more accessible to the greater Austin community. The Microband takes this a step further by bringing light, fun music to senior activity centers and nursing homes in the area.
