The Austin Symphonic "MicroBand"

In 1999, the Austin Symphonic Band launched a quarter-sized image of itself: the Austin Symphonic MicroBand. The MicroBand has only 25 pieces and is able to perform concerts in venues such as nursing homes, churches, and company picnics. The music performed is a mixture of marches, Broadway show medleys, and light favorites. Concerts are of about 45 minutes in duration.

Conductor of the MicroBand is Linda McDavitt, a member of the ASB (percussion) who recently retired from 30 years of band directing. At present she enjoys teaching privately and working for the Genevieve Orsinger Foundation. She spends free time sailing.

The inaugural concert for the MicroBand was Sunday, October 10, 1999 at The Summit at Westlake Hills. Organizations interested in engaging the MicroBand to perform at their facility should contact MicroBand event coordinator (and founder) Alan Cline via e-mail or by telephone at 512-345-7645.

Recent ASB MicroBand Performances:

The Austin chapters of DAR and SAR have a Memorial Day Service at the Texas State Cemetery on Memorial Day every year. In the past, the National Guard Band has played for this, but beginning last year, they were not able to play due to other commitments. The ASB MicroBand was invited to perform in their place this year (May 29), and we did so.

Here is a picture from the event.

Also, a short video in .avi format. Note that the video is rather large, so it may take a while to download. It can be played with Windows Media Player.
