Music Selection
ASB usually performs music originally written for concert band; little, if
any, "serious" classical music is performed. That said, the group will
often perform suites from musicals or from film scores that were originally
composed for orchestra (for example, John Williams, Andrew Lloyd
Webber, etc.).
Most concerts will usually have at least one Sousa march and one
piece by Australian composer, Percy Grainger. Other favourites include
Leonard Bernstein, Jim Curnow, Ron Nelson, Frank
Ticheli, Broadway showtunes, and marches.
If you'd like to hear the music the band plays, click here to listen to some of the band's recent performances. If you'd like to know what our exact program for a concert will be, visit our events page.
From time to time, ASB will perform a "theme" concert. Most recently,
these have included "Sousa" concerts, in which the band plays music in
the style and dress of John Philip Sousa's own band; "Pops Cabaret",
a joint concert with the River City Pops
choral group; and a "Lord of the Rings" concert, performing all five
movements of "The Lord of the Rings Symphony" with narration from
Tolkien's epic trilogy.
Those interested in expanding the band's repetoire are encouraged to consider
buying the music for the band to play! This requires the approval of the music
director; a work that does not meet the band's goals is unlikely to be approved.
